We Do Not Work Alone- A Collaborative Clay Workshop

wdnwa_fulltext.jpg

Much like an exquisite corpse drawing where a final piece is collectively assembled, this workshop will be a collaboration between you, the participant, and artist Sarah Koik. Sarah will bring sculptural bisque salt spoons that you will use to explore glazing techniques. Then you will make your own raw clay salt bowl that Sarah will transport back to her studio in Los Angeles, where she will bisque and glaze the bowls. The finished pair, a salt bowl made by you and glazed by Sarah, and a salt spoon made by Sarah and glazed by you, will be mailed to each person-- a final piece made by us together.

Author Yoshiko Uchida spent most of 1952 in Kyoto with ceramicist Kanjiro Kawai. In one of their many conversations, he said to her, “We do not work alone. Man can make a bowl of clay. He can make it round and smooth, but until it is fired it cannot be used. Man can lay the fire and the light the flame... but still it is the fire itself that really completes the bowl... And that fire is something bigger and more wonderful than any man.” (expert from pamphlet “We Do Not Work Alone the thoughts of Kanjiro Kawai”)
